Dear Students,
On behalf of the Department of Industrial Engineering at Balikesir University, I sincerely and respectfully greet you. Our Department has adopted as its mission to integrate the analytical approach of engineering sciences with the strategic perspective of management science; to educate engineers equipped with a systems perspective, advanced analytical and critical thinking skills, strong teamwork and leadership competencies, and a deep awareness of ethical, social, and environmental responsibility; to contribute scientifically and technologically to the field of Industrial Engineering through education, research, and industry collaboration; and to serve the sustainable development of the country by fostering a culture of lifelong learning among its graduates.
In today’s world, where global competition, digital
transformation, artificial intelligence, and sustainability are gaining
increasing momentum and significance, the concepts of efficiency, quality,
flexibility, information technologies, and innovation have become even more
critical. With this awareness, our Department aims to educate environmentally
conscious individuals who can rapidly adapt to changing conditions and actively
shape the future.
Our educational philosophy is built upon a structure that
integrates theoretical knowledge with practical application, encourages
interdisciplinary interaction, and places analytical thinking at its core. Our
curriculum encompasses core areas such as operations research, production
planning and control, mathematical modeling, productivity analysis, quality,
simulation, statistics, and engineering economics; it is also supported by
contemporary subjects including digitalization, computer-based applications, and
systems analysis. Our priorities extend beyond enabling our students to gain
technical competence; we also place great importance on fostering their
communication skills, teamwork abilities, leadership qualities, and a strong
sense of ethical responsibility. Through project-based learning practices,
industry-collaborative courses, technical visits, and internship programs, our
students are provided with opportunities to gain hands-on experience in
developing solutions to real-world problems.
In addition, in order to strengthen practice-oriented
competencies alongside our strong theoretical foundation, we have updated our
curriculum in line with the 7+1 education model. Within the scope of this
model, following seven semesters of academic education, our students dedicate
one semester to full-time industry experience; thus, they gain the opportunity
to apply the theoretical knowledge they have acquired in real professional
environments. Through the 7+1 implementation, our students experience professional
workplace culture prior to graduation, develop their problem-solving and
decision-making skills in practice, and enter working life better prepared and
more competently equipped.
Our Department embraces a student-centered approach as a
fundamental core value. Through the academic advising system, the individual
development of our students is closely monitored, and guidance is provided in
line with their career planning and academic goals. Through organized career
days and seminar events, our students’ interaction with industry
representatives is enhanced. The responsibilities undertaken by our graduates
in the fields of manufacturing, services, logistics, finance, information
technologies, and the public sector constitute a significant indicator of our
Department’s strong academic foundation and high-quality educational approach.
Our research activities constitute one of the fundamental
components of our Department’s academic identity. Our academic staff conduct
research and publish in areas such as optimization, metaheuristic methods, the
design of production and service systems, sustainable supply chain management,
data science, artificial intelligence–supported decision support systems,
ergonomics, simulation, and quality improvement; they also supervise graduate
theses and lead research projects in these fields.
The collaborations we have established constitute an
important component of our strategic development objectives. Through the
Erasmus exchange program, our students are supported in gaining academic
experience in different countries and acquiring practical experience through
internship opportunities, while our academic staff also enhance their academic
experience through this exchange program. Moreover, collaborative projects conducted with industry partners further strengthen university–industry cooperation, while theoretical knowledge is consolidated through practical implementation. These collaborations not only provide our students with
internship and employment opportunities, but also contribute to the development
of innovative solutions tailored to the needs of the industry.
Sustainability is
among the primary strategic priorities of our Department. We are guided by the
understanding that Industrial Engineering is not solely concerned with
enhancing organizational performance, but also with minimizing environmental
impacts and optimizing the efficient use of resources. While regularly
evaluating our educational processes, we take stakeholder feedback into
consideration and conduct national accreditation processes with great
diligence. Our objective is to sustainably develop and maintain a strong and
competitive departmental structure at both national and international levels.
As the Department of Industrial Engineering at Balikesir University, we are moving forward with determination toward becoming an academic community that generates knowledge, develops solutions, and creates value. With the dynamism of our students, the strong academic foundation of our faculty, and the support of our stakeholders, we will continue to develop sustainable solutions to complex engineering problems through an analytical and innovative perspective. Guided by science, committed to ethical principles, and driven by a profound sense of social responsibility, we will continue to make meaningful contributions to our country and to the global community.
Sincerely,
Chair of the Department of Industrial Engineering
Balikesir University
